Wisdom tooth removal is often advised if they are unable to erupt fully into the mouth or is a source of discomfort and severe infection. Third molar is the last teeth to erupt into the mouth between the age of 17 and 25. By the time third molars erupt, growth of the jaw and all other teeth is completed and third molars often do not have enough space to erupt fully.

Position and presentation of a third molar varies greatly, sometimes they can get trapped in the bone while some manage to erupt but not entirely. Due to the difficult positioning of third molar, food lodgment is quite often, this can lead to difficulty in keeping the area clean leading to infection and pain is the main concern in most patients. It is better to have them removed to prevent problems to the erupted teeth as well as their neighboring teeth.

It is advisable to remove wisdom tooth that are stuck within the bone due to their potential to develop into cysts later in life.
